Consultant eye surgeon, Eric Arnott, was one of the original pioneers of small-incision surgery. He was the first to perform modern Phaco surgery in Europe and designed lens implants that have restored the sight to millions of patients. The word autobiography is simply insufficient to describe this book, which is a remarkable testament to the life, works and marriage of a remarkable man. The book details the original invention of the lens implant by Harold Ridley, who Eric worked with in his early years of medical training. It goes on to follow the development of small-incision Phaco surgery, instigated by Charlie Kelman, and the disinterest and contempt held by the peers of these ophthalmologic pioneers. The author describes every advance in this field of ophthalmology in fascinating detail. The importance to Eric of religion, spirituality, family life and helping others less fortunate than himself is reinforced in this enthralling and at times very amusing read. Arnott draws you into his narrative, rousing thoughts of disbelief as you are compelled to continue reading, each new chapter and event in his life proving as fascinating as the last. Entertaining and illuminating, A New Beginning in Sight provides a detailed history of ophthalmology and is essential reading for ophthalmologists, other specialists and non-specialists alike.

Baptism is the entry into Christian life. In the early Church it was often administered to adults, who were expected to follow a course of instruction before and after baptism. In this book two bishops, Cyril of Jerusalem and Augustine of Hippo use the rites of baptism to explain the beliefs and way of life of Christians. Tertullian, a layman and lawyer, deals with the controversies that surrounded baptism in his day.

This book is a postmodern analysis of Ronald Reagan s 1984 film, A New Beginning, which marked the coming-of-age of the televisual political campaign film. The film was a landmark in the art of political filmmaking. Its thesis proclaimed a resurgence of American pride, patriotism, and prosperity under the leadership of Ronald Reagan. A New Beginning was unprecedented for a number of reasons: it replaced the traditional nominating speech for the candidate at the Republican National Convention; its form was a hybrid documentary and advertisement; it illustrated the use of televisual rebirth rhetoric to gain public support for a political ideology; and, most importantly, the masterful project documented a shift from verbal to visual rhetoric in American presidential campaigning. The author examines the film as a cultural text and as an effective political tool. Framing, ideology, myth, and visual cliche are analytic tools used to deconstruct the film; the method combines rhetorical theory with communication theory and semiotically-based theories of film and television. Morreale gives insight into the increasingly prevalent use of television to create a political reality."

Examining the idea that politics in Africa are influenced by both internal and external forces, POLITICS IN AFRICA evaluates the management of power by the post-colonial African state over the four decades of the 1960's through the 1990's. The text's goal is to show students the extent to which state-society relations in African countries have been transformed by the domestic and external pressures of the 1990's--and, in doing so, offer a context within which to understand Africa and its relationship with the world. This text is a part of the New Horizons in Comparative Politics Series.
