Can looking at disaster and mass death destroy us? Forgetting Lot's Wife provides a theory and a fragmentary history of destructive spectatorship in the twentieth century. Its subject is the notion that the sight of historical catastrophe can destroy the spectator. The fragments of this history all lead back to the story of Lot's wife: looking back at the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, she turns into a pillar of salt. This biblical story of punishment and transformation, a nexus of sexuality, sight, and cities, becomes the template for the modern fear that looking back at disaster might petrify the spectator. Although rarely articulated directly, this idea remains powerful in our culture. This book traces some of its aesthetic, theoretical, and ethical consequences. Harries traces the figure of Lot's wife across media. In extended engagements with examples from twentieth-century theater, film, and painting, he focuses on the theatrical theory of Antonin Artaud, a series of American films, and paintings by Anselm Kiefer. These examples all return to the story of Lot's wife as a way to think about modern predicaments of the spectator. On the one hand, the sometimes veiled figure of Lot's wife allows these artists to picture the desire to destroy the spectator; on the other, she stands as a sign of the potential danger to the spectator. These works, that is, enact critiques of the very desire that inspires them. The book closes with an extended meditation on September 11, criticizing the notion that we should have been destroyed by witnessing the events of that day.

From one of Britain’s most exciting young writers comes the story of a couple’s emotional and complicated relationship … from the husband’s perspective. Novel About My Wife is narrated by Tom Stone as he searches through the mysteries his wife has left him with. The reader is left to discover what dark thing has come between him and his beloved partner. Tom Stone is, as well as being cheerfully neurotic, madly in love with his wife Ann, an Australian in self-imposed exile in London. Pushing forty and newly pregnant, they buy their first house in Hackney. It seems they are moving into a settled future, despite spiralling money troubles. But Ann is dogged by a local homeless man whose constant presence comes to feel like a terrible omen. As her pregnancy progresses Ann finds solace in her new friendship with Kate, a woman Tom is both repelled by and peculiarly drawn to. Their home is beset with vermin, smells and strange noises. Is this normal for London, or is the measure of normality in this city actually mad? Novel About My Wife is Tom’s effort to understand this woman he has been so blindly in love with, and to peel back the past to see where the real threats in their lives were hiding. It is an investigation of guilt, love, forgiveness, and the perils of forgetting. She wasn’t one of those women who hate their feet, who hate their bodies, the kind who turn the sight of their ass in broad daylight into a state secret. (God, you just find yourself dying for a glimpse, you’ll do anything to get it, hover outside the bathroom door, hide under a table, pull back the sheets when she’s sleeping. Then because of all the mystery you end up, when you’re finally feasting your eyes, thinking, ‘hey, maybe she has got something to worry about.’) Ann didn’t care. Her body was open for viewing. It was one of the ways she distracted you from what was inside her head. --from Novel About My Wife From the Hardcover edition.

This collection makes a unique contribution to the study of anti-Muslim prejudice by placing the issue in both its past and present context. The essays cover historical and contemporary subjects from the eleventh century to the present day. They examine the forms that anti-Muslim prejudice takes, the historical influences on these forms, and how they relate to other forms of prejudice such as racism, antisemitism or sexism, and indeed how anti-Muslim prejudice becomes institutionalized. This volume looks at anti-Muslim prejudice from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including politics, sociology, philosophy, history, international relations, law, cultural studies and comparative literature. The essays contribute to our understanding of the different levels at which anti-Muslim prejudice emerges and operates - the local, the national and the transnational – by also including case studies from a range of contexts including Britain, Europe and the US. This book contributes to a deeper understanding of contemporary political problems and controversial topics, such as issues that focus on Muslim women: the 'headscarf' debates, honour killings and forced marriages. There is also analysis of media bias in the representation of Muslims and Islam, and other urgent social and political issues such as the social exclusion of European Muslims and the political mobilisation against Islam by far-right parties. This book was published as a special issue of Patterns of Prejudice.

She's cheating on you... Jack is your average hardworking man. But his world begins to crumble when he loses his job, slowly losing his wife in the process. Devastated and upset, he tries to reach out to other things, hoping that when he's successful about something, his wife would return to him. But how much effort does he have to exert just to bring back the woman he loves? Through it all Jack has the support of his bubbly and strong next-door neighbor, who always seems to put Jack back into the right mood. He strives to win back the interest of his wife and make her happy. And just when he thought he would be rewarded by his efforts, he finds out that his wife was never interested in making amends to their relationship. Brokenhearted and feeling hopeless, will days ever get better for Jack? Or will he simply be what his wife thinks of him- a disappointment? Sample 1: It was there that I met Judy Hansen. Judy and I hit it off because, like me, she was an Anglais from Montreal. In her case, she was from Dollard-des-Ormeaux, just west of the airport at Dorval. We had lots to talk about and it got us off on the way to becoming a couple. We exchanged numbers and I called her couple of days later and asked her for a date. She said yes, and that's how it all started. Judy is a good-looking woman. Not a knock-out mind you, but still very attractive. I sneaked a look at her driver's license one day and found she was 170cm (5' 7") and 60 kilos (132 lbs.). She has dark brown hair, cut short around her neck and she needs little to take care of it. She calls it her wash-and-wear hair. She doesn't wear a lot of makeup, but then in my opinion, she doesn't need to. She has a nice body, with medium-sized breasts and a slim backside, plus great legs. When she wears slacks, she looks very elegant. She has excellent posture and it helps accentuate her good looks. She also looks good in a bikini. Sample 2: Cindy looked at me, her eyes getting wider. "Are you trying to tell me you have feelings for me?" she asked carefully. I nodded. "Sorry ... but I'm afraid so." "Oh, shit. Now I'm really ... oh, shit. Jake, don't do this to me." "Do what?" I asked with a slight smile. "Don't mess with my head, Jake. This is too much. I haven't even kicked Al out and you're coming on to me. Jesus, that's not fair." "Yeah ... I know. But then again, what they did to us isn't fair either. This isn't about fair. This is about what we both know. If the way I feel for you isn't how you feel for me, just say so." Another dare. Cindy sat quietly and I could see the tears forming in her eyes. Had I pushed it too far ... too fast?

Job's Wife, is a one-act play in verse examining the response of Job's wife to the suffering of Job of the Bible. It is as much a paragon of poignancy as it is a materpiece of playwriting brevity, and it is nothing short of revelatory.-back cover
