Roy Lindermann, MP for a ruling Liberal Party in crisis, is left a Top Secret folder by his dead friend Dustin Hislop. Investigating the folder’s contents, he begins to unravel the story of James Brennan, writer, philosopher and 21st Century Prophet, who the terrified Government put on trial for Treason. Brennan has been under house arrest for years, his only communication with the outside world a soundless, live broadcast on TV every night from captivity. Now the transmissions have suddenly stopped. Fearing a conspiracy, Lindermann aims to find out if James is still alive. As his investigation deepens, Roy becomes ensnared in a hidden world of intelligence, counter-intelligence, murder and deceit, which goes right to the top of Government. This enthralling and thought-provoking thriller, set in the world of seedy London politics, has a subtle twist which will not fail to make even the most jaded of political thriller fans smile. Sample “Something has happened Simon!” I yelled down the phone. “I have to drive to Wales!” “Calm down dad,” Simon replied. “I’m sure she has just stayed too long in the bath!” That actually made me more scared. “No, Simon. I’m going. I will try to call her once, using this telephone and if she doesn’t reply, I’m off! Call me on my mobile if she calls you. You’ve got my number?” “Yes. You know I have. Listen dad, I haven’t seen hide nor hair of these spooks in the last few weeks. I think you’re probably chasing shadows.” “Listen Simon. I don’t have time to argue about this. I’ll call you when I get there!” I called Jill but she didn’t answer. Within five minutes, I had packed an overnight bag and started the Jag. As I headed towards the M4, I pondered whether Simon had been right; perhaps I really was ready for a ‘holiday.’ I certainly wouldn’t have won any medals for my work within the Party. Election Fever gripped the Country. We expected to lose but speculation ran wild about what would happen. Would it be a landslide? Did anybody have faith in politicians anymore? Voters would be out in droves, making sure we didn’t win but I didn’t care! I just wanted Jill to be safe. In fact, I wanted her back. True, I also wanted to know if James still lived but right now, that had to take a back seat. I turned into a side road, near Hammersmith, and saw two headlights follow me into the rat run. “Not unusual,” I told myself. I took another turning, this time unnecessary, and slowed down. The headlights followed me. “Again! Bastards!” I turned out of the road, back onto my route and put my foot down. The Jaguar is a nice car, especially when you need all of the V12 power to escape spooks! I drove as fast as I dared, given that I already had three whiskeys inside me, and by the time I reached Brentford, I thought I had lost them. But no! By now, I had glanced behind me several times and could make out a black Volvo estate, two cars back. Damn! Okay. Time for a detour. At Brentford roundabout, I weaved in and out of the traffic so that I could slip down the road to Kew. The tactic seemed to work. No more headlights seemed to follow me. I would take the M3 and then the M25 to reach the M4. It would take an extra hour but would be worth it if it meant losing the tail. I sang to myself while I drove. ‘They know I have a house in Wales. They will have gone sailing past me at Brentford!’ I mused. On the M3, I saw them again. But this time, there were two sets of lights, one behind the other. I couldn’t see the trailing car but I broke the speed limit all the way to the M25. The notorious ring road seemed quiet, even for that time of night, and I suddenly found the only cars behind me were the spooks’ even at 110 mph. ‘Bang!’ I had slowed slightly and the Volvo crashed into my rear bumper, sending me careening across all five lanes. I barely managed to regain control before hitting the grass verge. Desperate to escape my pursuers, I looked for a way off the motorway. Ahead I saw the friendly blue sign for a service station. I took the slip road and swerved into a vast, empty car park. On the far side, I saw a flimsy wooden barrier and a field beyond. I was going too fast to stop so I aimed for the gate and closed my eyes for impact. The car leaped into the air and came crashing down in the field. The steering wheel nearly wrenched from my hand. I opened my eyes and saw the rough grass field, lit up by lopsided light from one headlight. Apart from the light, there appeared to be little damage to my car. Checking my mirror, I saw the other two sets of lights bounce through the gate and enter the field. I gunned the engine and steered sharply to the right. The heavy Jag dug its wheels into the dirt, nearly rolling the car.

In the tradition of The Swerve and How to Live, this vivid biography reveals how a Renaissance scholar reshaped the visual world. Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574) was a man of many talents—a sculptor, painter, architect, writer, and scholar—but he is best known for Lives of the Artists, the classic account that singlehandedly invented the genre of artistic biography and established the canon of Italian Renaissance art. Before Vasari’s extraordinary book, art was considered a technical skill rather than an intellectual pursuit, and artists were mere decorators and craftsmen. It was through Vasari’s visionary writings that artists like Raphael, Leonardo, and Michelangelo came to be regarded as great masters of life as well as art, their creative genius celebrated as a divine gift. Their enduring reputations testify to Vasari’s profound yet unspoken influence on western culture. An advisor to kings and pontiffs—and a confidant to Titian, Donatello, and more—Vasari enjoyed an exhilarating career amid the thrilling culture of Renaissance Italy. In The Collector of Lives, Ingrid Rowland and Noah Charney offer a lively and inviting introduction to this pivotal figure in art history, and immerse readers in the world of the Medici of Florence and the popes of Rome. A narrative of intrigue, scandal, and colorful artistic rivalry, this vivid biography shows the great works of western art taking shape under Vasari’s keen eye—and reveals how one Renaissance scholar completely redefined how we look at art.

In Stars and Keys: Folktales and Creolization in the Southwest Indian Ocean, Lee Haring introduces readers to the rich folklore traditions of the islands of the southwest Indian Ocean. The culture of Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Réunion, and the Comoros is a unique blend of traditions that have been brought from Africa, South Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The folktales from these islands reflect the diversity of this culture and provide a rare opportunity to observe the fluidity of traditions and the process of creolization. Haring presents the tales in a uniquely innovative style: he interrupts the text as if he were reading aloud and directly addresses the reader. His words and those of the storytellers are clearly distinguished, making this folktale collection useful to a wide range of readers and scholars.
